United States: Freedom House Calls for Reaffirmation of Democratic Values

Washington

In response to the election of Donald Trump as president of the United States, Freedom House issued the following statement:

“Donald Trump, as president-elect, will assume responsibility for protecting the fundamental freedoms and democratic principles at the core of American life: freedom of expression, freedom of assembly, freedom of religion, judicial independence, the rule of law, and the promotion and protection of the rights of minorities and women,” said Daniel Calingaert, acting president. “It is only by defending these principles that American democracy can thrive. The new administration should strive to promote fairness and freedom, so that the United States can be an example of democracy at its best.”

The United States is rated Free in Freedom in the World 2016, Free in Freedom of the Press 2016, and Free in Freedom on the Net 2015.
