United States: Separating Migrant Families Targets the Defenseless
In response to the Trump administration’s policy of separating migrant children from their parents at the border with Mexico and then placing them in detention, Freedom House issued the following statement:
“The administration’s ‘zero-tolerance’ policy on irregular border-crossings, which entails the separation of parents from their children and the detention of both, stands as an appalling departure from the humane and democratic principles on which the United States is founded,” said Michael J. Abramowitz, president of Freedom House. “It is shameful because it treats migrants and asylum seekers, many of whom are fleeing criminal violence, as criminals themselves. It is deplorable because, increasingly, American policy prevents oppressed people from even applying for asylum, despite the fact that past grants of asylum have protected hundreds of thousands from war, injustice, and abuse while deeply enriching American society. Freedom House calls on the administration to immediately end the separation of children from their parents and then work with Congress to enact policies that will restore our immigration and asylum systems and renew America’s role as a beacon of liberty.”
