U.S. Correct to Withhold Some Aid to Egypt Because of Lack of Democracy

Washington

In response to the United States’ announcement that it cannot certify that the Egyptian government is taking steps to support a democratic transition and thus has not released FY 2014 assistance funds, Freedom House released the following statement:

“Freedom House welcomes the United States’ acknowledgement that recent actions of the Egyptian government do not reflect an attempt to transition to a representative and democratic government,” said Charles Dunne, director of Middle East programs at Freedom House. “The continued assault against the Muslim Brotherhood and the court decision that sentenced 529 defendants to death in connection with the killing of a policeman show the Egyptian government is not interested in protecting freedom equally for all citizens.”

“The environment for the presidential election scheduled for May is tainted by the detention of journalists, harassment of media outlets, repression of political opposition, and ongoing human rights abuses,” Dunne said. “We urge the military-led government to end these harmful practices and allow a free and open political process. The United States should recognize that an election alone does not signal a democratic transition, and the U.S. should withhold aid until all Egyptians receive protection under the law.”

Egypt is rated Not Free in Freedom in the World 2014, Not Free in Freedom of the Press 2013 and Partly Free in Freedom on the Net 2013.
