U.S.-Uzbek Relations: Four Years After Andijan

Senator John McCain marked the 4th anniversary of the Andijan massacre by urging the United States to continue playing a critical role in promoting human rights in Uzbekistan and around the world. At an event organized by Freedom House and Human Rights Watch May 13, McCain voiced concern that the Obama administration might become militarily dependent on Uzbekistan and fail to publically identify its human rights abuses. The senator was joined by Lutfullo Shamsutdinov, a human rights activist who is wanted by Uzbek authorities for exposing the 2005 massacre of civilians.
