Venezuela: Electoral Council Blocks Presidential Recall

In response to Venezuelan electoral officials suspending a referendum to unseat President Nicolas Maduro, Freedom House issued the following statement:

“The decision by election officials to block a referendum that might remove President Maduro from office highlights the government’s fear of public opinion,” said Carlos Ponce, director of Latin America programs. “By suspending the referendum process, the National Election Commission and courts beholden to Maduro ignore rule of law and worsen the country’s political crisis.”

Venezuela is rated Partly Free in Freedom in the World 2016, Not Free in Freedom of the Press 2016, and Partly Free in Freedom on the Net 2015.
