A Well-Deserved Nobel Peace Prize for Liu Xiaobo

Freedom House commends the Nobel Committee for awarding this year’s Peace Prize to Chinese writer, intellectual, and dissident Liu Xiaobo. Since his involvement with the 1989 Tiananmen Square protests, Liu has been a prominent human rights advocate in China and has been imprisoned repeatedly for criticizing the government. He is currently serving an 11-year sentence for “inciting subversion of state power” by drafting Charter ’08, a manifesto calling for a more democratic China.

Freedom House is an independent watchdog organization that supports democratic change, monitors the status of freedom around the world, and advocates for democracy and human rights.
