Freedom House condemns the violence in Côte d’Ivoire surrounding the referendum regarding constitutional amendments. 

It is essential that Côte d’Ivoire's presidential elections on October 25 are free, fair and take place in a peaceful environment.

Côte d’Ivoire is bringing war crime charges against  former pro-Ouattara rebels implicated in the 2010-2011 massacre. 

In response to the announcement that Simone Gbagbo—the former first lady of Côte d’Ivoire, who has been charged by the International Criminal Court with crimes against humanity allegedly committed during post-election violence in 2010-2011 – will appear before an Ivoirian court on October 22, 2014, Freedom House issued the following statement:

Worst of the Worst 2007

Sudan, North Korea and Uzbekistan are prominent among the most repressive regimes in the world, according to a report released by Freedom House.  The study, “The Worst of the Worst: The World's Most Repressive Societies 2007,” named seventeen countries with the worst records for political rights and civil liberties, and pointed to thirteen countries which have been on the list for five years or more.

Freedom House released an analysis of democracy in sub-Saharan Africa showing that the region has experienced notable increases in freedom over the past generation, although more setbacks than gains were seen in 2006.
