Freedom House is concerned by United Nations General Assembly electing Saudi Arabia, Chad, and Nigeria as members of the United Nations Security Council.

On the 25th anniversary of the October 5th plebiscite that ended Augusto Pinochet’s 17-year military rule and initiated a transition to democracy, Freedom House congratulates Chileans for the country’s extraordinary achievement of a peaceful exit from authoritarianism and its sustained democratic progress, which continues to inspire many activists living under oppressive regimes around the world.

On the 40th anniversary of the military-led coup d’état in Chile, Freedom House recognizes the victims of human rights violations perpetrated by the military regime and urges the government to fulfill its obligation to provide truth and justice to the victims and their families.

On March 22, the Organization of American States (OAS) held its 44th Special Session of the General Assembly to approve recommendations presented by the Permanent Council for strengthening the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR). Last week, Freedom House signed on to a declaration by almost 100 policy figures and former heads of state that urged the OAS to sustain the commission’s mandate to protect fundamental freedoms in Latin America. Freedom House trustee Diana Villiers Negroponte shares her views on the significance of the final resolution, agreed upon after 12 hours of deliberation by OAS foreign ministers, and what it means for the future of the IACHR as an independent watchdog in the region.

Evaluation of 2008-2011 UN Human Rights Council Candidates

On May 21, 2008, the UN General Assembly will elect 15 new Human Rights Council members. Twenty countries are candidates. Freedom House and UN Watch evaluated each candidate’s suitability for election to the Human Rights Council by examining its record of human rights protection at home and its record of human rights promotion at the UN.
