Freedom House calls upon government-controlled media in China to stop contributing to the tensions fueling deadly clashes between minority Uighurs and the ruling Han Chinese.

Freedom House is concerned that the Chinese government plans to further restrict freedom of expression and enhance its online surveillance capability by requiring that new web blocking software be included with all personal computers sold in the country as of July 1.

Freedom House condemns the Chinese government’s latest effort to restrict freedom of expression by blocking websites such as Twitter, Flickr and Hotmail two days before the twentieth anniversary of the Tiananmen Square crackdown.

Freedom House condemns Pakistan's recent decision to violate international law by handing over a group of Uighur exiles to the Chinese authorities. The case is a disturbing sign of China's growing influence in the region and illustrates how vulnerable Uighurs, a Muslim minority group in Western China, are to persecution both inside and outside China.
