More troubling than Venezuela’s likely election to a seat on the UN Security Council is the fact that democratic countries in the region have tacitly supported its nomination.

President Obama's call to arms against the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS), like his response to Russia's aggression against Ukraine, steps up U.S. efforts to curb major threats to U.S. interests. Does it also signal a greater commitment by Obama to stand up for democracy in the world? Probably not. But he should make democracy a priority.

The Colombian government’s decision to hand over two activists to the Venezuelan authorities, despite the clear threat posed to their safety, marks a blatant violation of Colombia’s commitments under Article 22.8 of the American Convention on Human Rights.

Opposition demonstrations that erupted in February to protest rampant crime and economic dysfunction have ebbed in recent months, but the government’s repressive tactics and neglect of underlying grievances have continued, putting the country on a path toward rising instability.
