Support Our Work

Freedom House is proud to partner with individual philanthropists, foundations, corporations, NGOs, and governments who share our values and tireless pursuit of democracy and freedom. Our donors are champions of democratic practice and values, restoring support for democracy.

Restoring support for democracy and its values is the critical issue of our time. After years of advance, democracy is in retreat around the world. More than one third of the world's population lives under dictatorships. Authoritarian regimes are intensifying their crackdown on dissent, stifling political opposition, civil society, and independent media, committing brazen acts of aggression against their own citizens. U.S. leadership is diminishing abroad, imperiling its relationships with global partners, and skepticism about U.S. actions in support of democracy is rampant. As nationalist, populist and other anti-establishment movements gain momentum, Freedom House's research has found that a majority of Americans see democracy in the U.S. as weak and getting weaker.

Freedom House believes it is necessary to rebuild the once powerful alliance of democratic societies that existed in the world. An essential step is to strengthen free institutions and democratic values in the U.S., as well as to restore bipartisan support for democracy as a core feature of U.S. foreign policy. By giving to Freedom House, you are supporting efforts to reestablish U.S. leadership on democracy and democratic leadership.

Since its founding in 1941, Freedom House has helped shape the debate on the most pressing issues of its time, from promoting civil rights in the U.S. to challenging dictators and helping to stabilize free institutions in new and fragile democracies. Our independence is central to our ability to operate around the world, and as such, Freedom House will not accept gifts that:

  • Impair our ability to operate independently or to speak out forcefully for freedom and democracy in the U.S. and abroad;
  • Undermine the independence of our research, analysis, or programming;
  • Endanger our reputation.

Freedom House is a nonpartisan 501(c)(3) organization. All donations are tax deductible to the extent allowed by law.
