Freedom after the Freedom Agenda

Top U.S. foreign policy experts debated challenges for the Obama administration posed by the findings of Freedom in the World 2009, Freedom House's latest report, at an event January 27. More than 150 people for governmental agencies, think tanks and embassies attended the discussion at the Newseum in Washington.
Washington Post columnist Jackson Diehl moderated the wide-ranging debate which covered the expected impact of the economic crisis in authoritarian states, the challenge of creating political pluralism in strategic Muslim countries and the recent regression of democracy in Africa. Panelists included Thomas Carothers, Carnegie Endowment for International Peace; Larry Diamond, Stanford University; Joshua Muravchik, author of The Next Founders: Voices of Democracy in the Middle East and Arch Puddington, general editor of Freedom in the World 2009.
