Please join us for a conversation on the state of democratic institutions in Nicaragua. Since winning elections in 2007, Daniel Ortega has consolidated his grip on power by gradually undermining democracy, intimidating critics and the media, and expelling opposition members from the Nicaraguan Congress. His latest steps toward establishing a new dictatorial dynasty include nominating Rosario Murillo, Ortega’s wife, as vice-president, impeding opposition candidates running for office, and not allowing international monitors to observe upcoming elections.
