STOP THE PRESSES? Global Media and the Economic Downturn

Thursday, May 7, 2009 - 7:00pm to 8:30pm

Ceremonial Courtroom
Loyola University School of Law
25 E. Pearson Street, Chicago, IL

World Press Freedom Day on May 3 comes this year as news media worldwide struggle to survive the economic downturn. The crisis is affecting some of our most cherished news outlets in the U.S.—even large conglomerates such as the Tribune Company—calling into question whether the Fourth Estate will be able to continue its traditional watchdog role in our society, let alone that of others. Freedom House will examine the impact of the financial crisis on media at home and abroad as it presents findings from this year's Freedom of the Press, an annual assessment of press freedom in 194 countries.

The event features Freedom House Executive Director Jennifer Windsor, Director of Studies Chris Walker, and its trustee Lee Cullum, noted commentator for the NewsHour with Jim Lehrer, National Public Radio’s All Things Considered and the Dallas Morning News. Timothy McNulty, former public editor of the Chicago Tribune, will host the discussion.
