The murder of Honduran Judge Mireya Efigenia Mendoza Pena is another tragic reminder of the serious violence affecting the country, as judges and other legal professionals face reprisals for their work.  Mendoza is the 64th legal professional who has been killed in Honduras since 2010. Freedom House calls on the Honduran government to take the necessary measures to ensure judges are protected from threats, intimidation, aggression and other forms of violence, so as to ensure the integrity and independence of the judiciary.

Freedom House condemns the assassination of prominent Libyan lawyer and political activist Abdelsalam Musmari and sends its deepest condolences to his family. Freedom House also calls for a thorough investigation of this heinous murder to bring the perpetrators to justice.

The environment for press freedom has deteriorated in Honduras in large part due to a violent and unstable climate, observed Viviana Giacaman, director for Latin America programs, in her testimony before the Tom Lantos Human Rights Commission on July 25th.

Freedom House condemns the assassination of Tunisian opposition leader Mohammed Brahmi and sends its deepest condolences to his family. Freedom House also calls for a thorough and transparent investigation of the crime to bring the perpetrators to justice.

 

Freedom House calls on the Ukrainian government to fully investigate allegations that two journalists covering a public demonstration against police brutality were beaten by the police, and to respect citizens’ rights to freedom of expression and assembly.

Freedom House is alarmed by the Chinese authorities’ recent arrest of leading public interest lawyer and human rights defender Xu Zhiyong, and calls for his immediate release and for all charges against him to be dropped. Xu's arrest is part of an ongoing crackdown by authorities against rights defenders and anti-corruption advocates, particularly those involved in the anti-corruption-focused New Citizens' Movement, and points to the government’s intolerance to even moderate levels of dissent. Earlier today Xu's lawyer, Liu Weiguo, was reportedly detained while attempting to visit Xu at a detention center in Beijing.

 

Freedom House is deeply disturbed and outraged by the torture and killing of Cameroonian LGBTI activist, Eric Lembembe and urges authorities at the highest level to condemn violence against the LGBTI community and to take appropriate measures to bring those responsible for this sadistic murder to justice.
