Freedom House urgently calls on the government of Tajikistan to show restraint and respect the rights of civilians in Gorno-Badakshan Autonomous Province (GBAO). The government must make all efforts to ease tensions in the region before a rapidly escalating conflict spirals out of control.

Freedom House is deeply concerned for the safety of Alhurra journalists, Bashar Fahmi and Cuneyt Unal, who went missing yesterday while reporting from Aleppo, Syria and are thought to have been captured by Syrian authorities. Freedom House joins Alhurra and the Broadcasting Board of Governors (BBG) in calling for the immediate release of the two journalists.

The closure of a satellite channel in Jordan which aired views critical of royal officials is the latest in a series of moves by the government to muzzle its increasingly vocal critics.

Freedom House condemns the conviction of Pussy Riot, the punk rock protest group known for creatively demonstrating against the Putin regime in Russia.

Freedom House denounces the sentencing of human rights activist Nabeel Rajab to three years imprisonment in Bahrain on trumped up charges.

Today began the trial of Kazakhstani opposition leader Vladimir Kozlov, accused of attempting to overthrow the government in relation to the violence in Zhanaozen in December 2011. Kozlov has been held in detention since January of this year and is being tried alongside activists Serik Sapargali and Akzhanat Aminov.

The brutal killing of journalist Jose Noel Canales highlights the persistent danger for media in Honduras.  Freedom House calls on Honduran authorities to thoroughly investigate the circumstances of his death and to not rule out that the killing might be linked to his journalistic work
