Today, it is with a heavy heart that Freedom House mourns the death of its longtime board member and an exemplary human being who dedicated his life to peace, security and diplomacy, Ambassador Max Kampelman.

Findings from Freedom in the World 2013, Freedom House's annual report on the state of global freedom, reveal that democracy declined worldwide for the seventh straight year in 2012. 

Freedom House’s final monitoring report on the trial of Kazakhstani opposition activists Vladimir Kozlov and Akzhanat Aminov, and labor activist Serik Sapargali, documents gross violations of the right to a fair trial.

Weak institutions are a major obstacle for democratic progress in the Middle East and North Africa, said Freedom House executive vice president Daniel Calingaert in a presentation on the Countries at the Crossroads report at the European Parliament in Brussels.

The absence of competitive opposition political parties and the dominance of state-run media have led to a political culture of patronage and corruption in Namibia.

With President Mohammad Morsi claiming widespread new powers leading to massive public protests, the future of Egyptian democracy remains in the balance. Freedom House Egypt Project Director Dr. Nancy Okail and Senior Fellow for Middle Eastern Studies at the Council on Foreign Relations Dr. Stephen Cook discussed the uncertain future of Egypt at a Freedom House event on Dec. 10.
