A Chinese court’s conviction on Sept. 23 of Ilham Tohti, an economics professor, on charges of “separatism” and its sentencing him to life imprisonment highlight the government’s efforts to subdue unrest in Xinjiang, the country’s far-western region that is also home to most Uighurs, the Muslim ethnic group to which Tohti belongs.

In a research report released today, "Politics of Judicial Independence in Malawi " Freedom House examines judicial independence in Malawi, including the scope of judicial power, differentiation and separation of powers, internal institutional safeguards, transparency, and external institutional support.

The UN Human Rights Council passed a resolution that expressed concern about discrimination and violence against individuals on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity.

More than 30 youth activists and political opposition members were arrested by Sudanese state security forces.
