Russia’s flagrant censorship in blocking access to several independent online news and social media outlets is both unprecedented in post-Soviet Russia and a clear violation of free speech and freedom of the press, Freedom House said today.


In its latest budget request, the Obama administration continues its pivot towards the East Asia and Pacific region with increased funding, proposes decreased funding for Latin America and Eurasia, and continues a policy of uneven support for democratic transitions in the Middle East.



In the face of new, sophisticated restrictions, frontline human rights activists are unprepared for the security challenges they face, while donors and international support groups struggle to collaborate effectively and protect and defend human rights, Freedom House concludes in a report issued today.

Egypt strayed further from the democratic path in the eighth months since the military-backed government took power, according to Freedom House’s Egypt Democracy Compass.

Freedom House expresses its gratitude for the $100,000 gift made by Edwin Schloss and the Schloss Family Foundation in support of Freedom in the World, Freedom House’s annual report on global political rights and civil liberties. The publication has provided analysis and evaluated the state of freedom country by country since 1972.

Publication in Uganda of the names of 200 people said to be homosexual should make clear to President Yoweri Museveni and the Ugandan government that the country’s new anti-LGBTI law endangers fundamental human rights and should be repealed.

 

Targeted American and European Union visa and asset sanctions are still needed to guarantee that the agreement signed February 21 by opposition leaders and Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych genuinely protects Ukrainians' fundamental human rights, Freedom House said.
