The latest Egypt Democracy Compass—in which seven out of eight indicators of progress on the roadmap to democracy were rated as ‘stalled’ or ‘backsliding’—reinforces the conclusion that Egypt’s so-called democratic transition has failed before elections have even been held.

Freedom House has noted complaints by the government of Turkey about Turkey being ranked “Not Free” in our report, Freedom of the Press 2014. The government’s objection that the ranking does not take into account events occurring in 2014 is misplaced, as made clear by the report.

Freedom House welcomes Secretary of State John Kerry’s public statement on Ethiopia’s unwarranted arrest last week of nine Ethiopian bloggers and journalists, who remain in custody.

Global press freedom has fallen to its lowest level in over a decade, according to a Freedom House report released today. The decline was driven in part by major regression in several Middle Eastern states, including Egypt, Libya, and Jordan; marked setbacks in Turkey, Ukraine, and a number of countries in East Africa; and deterioration in the relatively open media environment of the United States.

Freedom House mourns the death of influential Egyptian blogger Bassem Sabry, who died after falling from a balcony in unexplained circumstances in Cairo on April 29.  Sabry was an important voice for political freedoms in Egypt.

Freedom House applauds the ruling of a regional court in Kyrgyzstan to reopen an investigation into allegations that human rights defender Azimjan Askarov was tortured while in detention in 2010.
