Freedom House strongly condemns the conviction of Russian corruption fighter and opposition figure, Alexey Navalny, in a trial and prosecution clearly staged to derail his political career. Navalny, 37, who became famous for investigations of government corruption on his blog, vocal criticism of the Russian government, and unconventional grassroots organizing activities, was sentenced today to five years in prison on charges of theft.

Freedom House strongly denounces the outrageous verdict of a Moscow court convicting deceased lawyer Sergei Magnitsky on spurious charges of tax evasion. The case against Magnitsky is the first posthumous trial against a defendant in Russia; Magnitsky’s former client, William Browder, head of Hermitage Capital, was also found guilty.

The Egyptian military’s July 3 coup, which deposed elected President Mohamed Morsi, requires a suspension of U.S. aid to Egypt, Freedom House said today.

Freedom House calls on the interim government of Egypt to lead an inclusive and transparent process in preparing for early elections in the wake of the military’s removal of President Mohamed Morsi from office. Although the road map presented by Armed Forces Chief Abdul Fatah al-Sisi together with opposition leaders provides an opportunity to move Egypt toward democracy, Freedom House is deeply concerned by the decision to depose an elected president.

Freedom House urges President Obama to address the democracy and human rights challenges confronting Africa in his upcoming visit to Senegal, South Africa, and Tanzania from June 26 to July 3. President Obama must stress to African leaders that building durable democracies as well as vibrant economies is essential to sustained growth in the region.

Freedom House applauds the Supreme Court’s decision today to strike down the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) and dismiss the case on Proposition 8, which bans same-sex marriage in California. Both decisions represent major milestones for human rights and LGBTI equality in the United States.

Freedom House condemns a violent assault by Russian authorities on the staff of one of the country's most prominent NGOs, “For Human Rights,” including its chair, Lev Ponomaryov, and calls on the international community to register its strong opposition to such thuggish tactics.
