The arbitrary arrest of John Kapito, chairperson of the Malawi Human Rights Commission, is yet another alarming example of the rapidly deteriorating environment for human rights defenders in Malawi, according to Freedom House.

The execution without a fair trial of two men convicted of the Minsk metro bombing and a recent travel ban on human rights defenders and government critics in Belarus point to continued serious repression by the Lukashenka regime, according to Freedom House. The international community must continue to push back against Lukashenka’s blatant violations of fundamental freedoms.

Freedom House calls for the release of four Jordanian activists detained for criticizing King Abdullah II; if convicted, the activists could face up to three years in prison.

Freedom House condemns the Russian Justice Ministry’s refusal to grant registered NGO status to the Dutch organization Russian Justice Initiative. RJI is the leading organization representing victims of human rights abuses in Chechnya and elsewhere in the North Caucuses at the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR).

Freedom House is very concerned that an article published on March 4, 2012 in El Ciudadano misrepresented Freedom House’s position on freedom of expression in Ecuador. The article included inaccurate facts about a meeting between representatives of the Ecuadorean government and Freedom House; Freedom House welcomes the Ecuadorean government’s move to retract the article.

Freedom House mourns the loss of U.S. Representative Donald Payne, who died today at the age of 77. He was the Ranking Member of the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Africa, Global Health, and Human Rights and previously served as Chairman of the Congressional Black Caucus.

Freedom House welcomes the decision by Egyptian authorities to permit wrongfully charged foreign NGO workers to leave the country but remains very concerned about the fate of 14 Egyptians who remain in the country and continue to face spurious charges. We call for the criminal case against all defendants to be immediately dropped and for authorities to allow civil society organizations to resume their work without interference.
