Freedom House commends the decision by the United Nations General Assembly to suspend Libya’s membership from the Human Rights Council and urges UN members to refrain from electing other human rights abusing countries to that body in future elections.
Freedom House demands the immediate release of Iranian opposition leaders Mehdi Karroubi and Mir Hossein Mousavi and their wives, who were reportedly transferred to Heshmatiyeh prison in northeast Tehran from a “safe house” in an unknown location on Monday.
It is with great sadness that Freedom House marks the one-year anniversary of Cuban political prisoner Orlando Zapata Tamayo’s death. On February 23, 2010, the 42-year-old political prisoner died after more than 80 days on a hunger strike, which he began in protest of prison conditions in Cuba.
On the one-year anniversary of the 2010 Washington Human Rights Summit, Freedom House, Human Rights First, the Latin American and Caribbean Network for Democracy, the Indonesian Human Rights Working Group, the Media Institute of Southern Africa, and the Cairo Institute for Human Rights Studies call for renewed efforts by governments to combat restrictions to the fundamental freedoms of association and expression and to support those calling for human rights and basic freedoms around the world.
