The draft resolution to establish a United Nations Human Rights Council, presented recently by UN General Assembly President Jan Eliasson, is more than a disappointment. Its adoption by the General Assembly will constitute an enormous missed opportunity for the international community - one that may not come again for many years.
Freedom House strongly condemns today's beating and detention of opposition presidential candidate Alyaksandr Kazulin by the Belarusian police. Kazulin was trying to enter the All-Belarusian People's Assembly, headed by President Alyaksandr Lukashenka, which opened in Minsk today.
In light of the declaration of a state of emergency by Philippines President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, Freedom House is making available background reports on governance and the state of political and civic freedoms in the country.
President Bush will be heading to South Asia in early March to meet with the leaders of India, Pakistan and potentially Afghanistan and Bangladesh. The region is a vital one and is host to a range of political situations. Some countries in the area are electoral democracies, while in others, the development of civilian political institutions has been much slower in taking root.
The American Committee for Peace in the Caucasus (ACPC) at Freedom House will host a panel discussion on February 23, 2006, on Capitol Hill to commemorate the anniversary of the 1944 deportations of North Caucasus peoples by Stalin to Central Asia. The event will also draw attention to human rights abuses and the expansion of conflict beyond Chechnya to other regions of the North Caucasus today.
Freedom House, the Transnational Radical Party and UN Watch urge opposition to the anti-blasphemy language proposed by the Organization of the Islamic Conference to be added into the text outlining the new UN Human Rights Council.
The Democracy Coalition Project, Freedom House and the Transnational Radical Party are calling on the 16-member Convening Group of the Community of Democracies to lead efforts for successful reform of the United Nations Commission on Human Rights.
