What happens when democracies are guilty of backsliding? 

Democracy has been under threat around the world for many years from authoritarian rulers, military leaders and terrorist groups. Last year the pressures intensified significantly.

Today an Ethiopian court decided to recognize formal charges against the Zone Nine bloggers and journalists, who have been imprisoned for nine months. 

More aggressive tactics by authoritarian regimes and an upsurge in terrorist attacks contributed to a disturbing decline in global freedom in 2014. 

The biggest score changes in Freedom in the World 2015 illustrate the damage wrought by military coups, civil wars, and authoritarian power grabs.
