Freedom House is deeply troubled by the reported killing of Colombian activist Luz Neida Gomez Gomez, the treasurer of a local community action council in Vereda Buenos Aires, Colombia. Authorities must conduct a thorough and transparent investigation into her death, and ensure that all steps are taken to hold accountable those responsible for this crime.
Freedom House is now accepting applications to the Freedom House IGF Incubator Project, a contest for innovative Internet freedom projects that target regional and country-specific issues to vie for funding opportunities. Representatives of at least four projects will be selected to participate in the Freedom House delegation to the 7th Annual IGF Meeting in Azerbaijan in November 2012, where contestants will present their ideas before a panel of judges in a public pitch. At least two projects will be selected to receive Freedom House funding.
Freedom House condemns today’s decision to postpone the August 7 trial for three Vietnamese bloggers. This is the third time the court has delayed the trial, which stems from charges widely considered to be punishment for their criticism of the government. Freedom House calls for the Vietnamese government to drop all charges against the three bloggers and ensure their immediate release.
On the one-year anniversary of the arrest of prominent Belarusian human rights defender Ales Bialiatski, Freedom House reiterates its call for his immediate release, as well as the release of other political prisoners in Belarus.
