The latest findings of the Freedom of the Press report show the state of media independence around the world. It’s not a pretty picture.

The following countries may be moving toward important changes in their press freedom conditions—for better or worse—in the coming year.

In response to Hong Kong authorities’ arrests of two pro-independence legislators and nine pro-democracy activists for “illegal assembly” and “public disorder,” Freedom House issued a statement.

Global press freedom declined to its lowest point in 13 years in 2016 due to unprecedented threats to journalists and media outlets in major democracies, intensified crackdowns by authoritarian states, according to Freedom of the Press 2017, the latest edition of Freedom House’s annual report on media freedom around the world.
