Tajikistan: Authorities Abusing Imprisoned Human Rights Lawyer
September 29, 2017
In response to family members reporting that prison officials in Tajikistan have repeatedly beaten Buzurmehr Yorov, the country’s most prominent human rights lawyer, Freedom House issued the following statement:
“The government of Tajikistan should immediately provide Yorov with medical care and promptly release him,” said Marc Behrendt, director of Eurasia programs at Freedom House. “Yorov faces 25 years imprisonment after conviction on bogus charge of ‘extremism,’ for defending the rights of members of the Islamic Resistance Party. The government’s abuse of Yorov is part of its campaign to intimidate all citizens sympathetic to the party."
