Nearly three years after the formation of the Government of National Unity (GNU) in February 2009, state-sanctioned violence, arrests of opposition members and activists, and an increasingly closed political space have proliferated. Since 2006, Freedom House has worked with upwards of 60 civil society organizations in Zimbabwe, providing a broad range of support from trainings in strategic planning and organizational security, to programs that effectively mobilize popular civic engagement. Freedom House helped create the Media Centre in Harare, which has provided critical resources to expand production of independent news.  Efforts to accentuate Zimbabwe civil society voices at a regional and international level have also been a priority through advocacy visits by prominent human rights defenders to the United States and the United Nations Human Rights Council.
