Most countries in Eurasia rank at or near the bottom of Freedom House’s ratings for political rights and civil liberties. While a few—such as Georgia, Moldova, and Ukraine—have struggled to democratize and pursue European integration in recent years, they face strong resistance from Russia and antidemocratic elements within their borders. Freedom House’s programs in the region support courageous activists in their struggle to strengthen basic human rights, provide independent news and analysis, and combat grave violations of the rule of law. In response to a Kazakh court ordering the closure of the independent website Ratel.kz and prohibiting its editor from using the outlet’s name to publish articles elsewhere, Freedom House released

The head of Ukraine’s Security Service announced today that authorities faked the death of Russian journalist Arkady Babchenko in Kyiv.

In response to the killing in Kyiv of Arkady Babchenko, a prominent independent Russian journalist who lived and worked in Ukraine, Freedom House issued a statement.

Following Russian authorities’ arrest of a prominent Crimean Tatar human rights figure, Server Mustafayev, as part of an intensifying crackdown against minority groups in the Crimean peninsula, Freedom House issued a statement.

Programs

Freedom House implements the multi-year Mobilizing Civil Society to Support Judicial Integrity in the Republic of Moldova project, which aims to support justice sector reform in Moldova by creating an environment in which the public is better informed about ongoing developments in the country’s justice sector and how they impact citizens’ daily lives.

Through collaboration with partner civil society organizations in the country, Freedom House aims to boost capacity in civil society to effectively monitor media and to improve the legal and regulatory environment for independent media.

Freedom House seeks proposals from independent researchers, scholars, and affiliated research analysts based in Moldova, the Eastern Partnership region and surrounding countries.

Freedom House works in Eurasia to protect professional and citizen journalists, to bolster activist capacity, and to support LGBTI rights activists.

Freedom House enhances the capacity of local civil society groups to rapidly respond to human rights violations, to provide advocates with the skills to defend the right to freedom of assembly, and to equip local groups with the tools to combat gender-based violence and bride-kidnapping in Kyrgyzstan.

The Lifeline Embattled CSO Assistance Fund provides emergency financial assistance to civil society organizations (CSOs) under threat or attack and advocacy support responding to broader threats to civil society. 

Freedom House administers several funds which offer emergency assistance to organizations and individuals around the world who are under threat because of their human rights work.

Freedom House joined eight other leading media freedom organizations as part of the International Partnership Group for Azerbaijan’s freedom of expression mission in September 2010.
