Eurasia

Most countries in Eurasia rank at or near the bottom of Freedom House’s ratings for political rights and civil liberties. While a few—such as Georgia, Moldova, and Ukraine—have struggled to democratize and pursue European integration in recent years, they face strong resistance from Russia and antidemocratic elements within their borders. Freedom House’s programs in the region support courageous activists in their struggle to strengthen basic human rights, provide independent news and analysis, and combat grave violations of the rule of law. A summary of our work in the region can be found here.

News & Updates

One year before the pivotal presidential election in March 2012, Russia confronts an immense and growing corruption problem at all levels of government and society that severely threatens chances for reform, according to a special report released today by Freedom House and the Latvian policy institute Providus.

Freedom House today joins Uzbek human rights organizations in condemning the government of Uzbekistan’s expulsion of Human Rights Watch (HRW) from the country, calling the move an unequivocal strike against transparency and accountability in the Central Asian state.

Freedom House strongly condemns the intimidation and arrest of activists and journalists by Azeri authorities over the weekend and calls for the immediate release of all detained.

The ongoing harassment and detention of journalists in Turkey, including a number who have been held for two years without trial, represents an alarming threat to press freedom.
