Eurasia

Most countries in Eurasia rank at or near the bottom of Freedom House’s ratings for political rights and civil liberties. While a few—such as Georgia, Moldova, and Ukraine—have struggled to democratize and pursue European integration in recent years, they face strong resistance from Russia and antidemocratic elements within their borders. Freedom House’s programs in the region support courageous activists in their struggle to strengthen basic human rights, provide independent news and analysis, and combat grave violations of the rule of law. A summary of our work in the region can be found here.

News & Updates

Freedom House congratulates Oleg Orlov, Lyudmila Alexeyeva and Sergei Kovalev of human rights group Memorial on winning the 2009 Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought, awarded by the European Parliament to "individuals or international organisations who - like Sakharov – have distinguished themselves in the struggle for human rights."

As the United Nations General Assembly prepares to vote on a Canadian-sponsored resolution condemning ongoing human rights violations in the Islamic Republic of Iran, Freedom House joins Iranian pro-reform activists and other human rights groups in urging member states to support the resolution.

The sentencing of two Azerbaijani bloggers to prison yesterday in a markedly non-transparent legal process is deeply disturbing, Freedom House said today, adding that the decision to silence the bloggers strikes a blow against the nascent success of new media in Azerbaijan.

The European Union's decision yesterday to lift the arms embargo on Uzbekistan sends a message that the country’s egregious human rights record is inconsequential, Freedom House said today, adding that the EU should be unequivocal in its condemnation of human rights abuses.
