U.S. Groups Helped Nurture Arab Uprisings
Freedom House is disappointed with the decision of Egypt’s Judicial High Committee, which is supervising this Saturday’s referendum on constitutional amendments, to limit the access of domestic and international monitoring groups to the polls.

The flaws in Egypt’s parliamentary elections last Sunday call into question the credibility of the electoral process and show the critical need for reform, according to Freedom House.

The lack of transparency and fair political competition, as well as a recent rise in violence in Egypt ahead of Sunday’s parliamentary elections, leaves little hope that the results will reflect the will of the Egyptian people, according to Freedom House.

Speaking in Ghana on Saturday President Obama lectured Africans on local repression, corruption, brutality, good governance and accountability.

Freedom House applauds U.S. President Barack Obama for his remarks today in Cairo, in which he proclaimed that the fundamentals of democracy represent “human rights,” to which all people aspire, and stressed his administration’s commitment to support these universal values around the world.

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton praised the work of a group of Egyptian civil society activists she met with today and said it was in Egypt’s interest to move toward democracy and to exhibit more respect for human rights.
