Answers:
Do I need to obtain permission to use or republish Freedom House content?
- All use of Freedom House content for commercial purposes must be formally approved by Freedom House prior to publication or any other use.
- Use of Freedom House content for noncommercial purposes is permitted, but the work must be acknowledged with a citation or other clear reference. Click here to see how to cite Freedom House.
- You do not need to request permission to share Freedom House content that has been published online. (E.g., emailing a report to colleagues, sharing content on social media, etc.)
How do I obtain permission to use or republish Freedom House content for commercial purposes?
- Email [email protected] detailing your request and the specific Freedom House content you are seeking permission to use. Please state clearly any intention to use Freedom House content for commercial purposes.
- Please make the email subject line: “Permission Request: [Your company or organization name], [Project]”
- E.g. “Permission Request: Ellicott Publishing Inc., textbook”
- You do not have to request permission to use Freedom House content if your use falls under the Fair Use doctrine of US copyright law. Visit Copyright.gov to learn more about Fair Use.
How do I obtain information about corporate partnerships with Freedom House?

How do I cite/credit Freedom House content?
- Citations will vary based on the style guide you are using. Always include the author, title of the work, copyright notice, and publication date.
- For online and print reports, consult the “Acknowledgements” section for how to cite the report.
- See the latest MLA, AP, Chicago, or other style guide for more information.
- Freedom House authors are typically listed near the top of the web page where content is available online, and on top of or inside the cover of printed reports. For press releases and other items without a byline, the work may be attributed to “Freedom House.”
My deadline is fast approaching. How can I have my permission request fulfilled ASAP?
- Due to finite resources and the large volume of emails Freedom House receives, we are unable to immediately respond to every permission request submitted. We will fulfill requests as soon as possible.
I’m a teacher/instructor/professor. Can I use Freedom House content in my lesson materials?
- Educators may use Freedom House content in their class materials, as long as it is for noncommercial purposes. Please include a citation or other clear reference. Click here to see how to properly cite Freedom House.
I’m a teacher/instructor/professor. Where can I get a Freedom in the World map or printed report for my classroom?
- Freedom House has a limited number of Freedom in the World maps and reports available for educators who request them. Make your request via email, including your name and school or university to [email protected].
- Please make the email subject line: “Map Poster Request: [Your school], [Location]”

I need help with my research, assignment, or project. Can Freedom House help?
- Due to finite resources and the large volume of emails Freedom House receives, we are unable to assist users in locating specific Freedom House content or researching specific countries or topics. Please search our website or other databases to find the information you are looking for.
