Research Director, Strategy and Design

Yana leads work across several portfolios on the Research and Analysis team at Freedom House. She has co-authored Defending Democracy in Exile (2022), Still Not Safe: Transnational Repression in 2023 (2023), Marking 50 Years in the Struggle for Democracy (2023), A Light That Cannot Be Extinguished (2023), Addressing Transnational Repression on Campuses in the United States (2024) and The Mounting Damage of Flawed Elections and Armed Conflict (2024). Her analysis has been published in Foreign AffairsThe Guardian, The Washington PostPolitico, Journal of Democracy, Just Security, Huffington PostPost-Soviet AffairsPS: Political Science and PoliticsRussian PoliticsDemocratizationThe Diplomat, Russian Analytical Digest, Moscow Times, Political Research Exchange, Ponars Policy Memos, and International Migration. Prior to joining Freedom House, Yana worked as an academic analyzing protest and politics in post-Soviet states. She holds a PhD in Political Science from the University of British Columbia and was a postdoctoral scholar at Columbia University until 2019.
