Cathryn helps lead research for Freedom House’s annual Freedom in the World
report and is the co-author of Freedom in the World 2024: The Mounting Damage
of Flawed Elections and Armed Conflict (2024). Her research focuses on human
rights and democracy in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA), and she has
served as a MENA regional lead for several Freedom House research streams
including Democracy Studies and Technology and Democracy. Cathryn’s analysis
has been published and cited in various regional and international outlets
including Al-Jazeera, The Washington Post, Politico, Just Security, Al-Monitor,
Forbes, The New Arab, Axios, and The Hill. Prior to joining Freedom House,
Cathryn worked with Lebanese, Syrian, and Palestinian civil society organizations
on gender equality advocacy in humanitarian and refugee settings. Cathryn holds a
M.A. in international relations from the University of Chicago and a B.A. in political
science and public health from New York University.
