Latin America and the Caribbean Programs

Freedom House helps citizens defend their rights against government abuses in several countries of Latin America and the Caribbean.

Freedom House helps citizens defend their rights against government abuses in several countries of Latin America and the Caribbean. Freedom House supports activists from Guatemala, Nicaragua, Venezuela and Cuba in documenting and presenting evidence of their governments’ abuses to international organizations. Read more about our programs in Latin America below.

Guatemala

In the face of increased government pressure on Guatemalan human rights defenders and civil society organizations, Freedom House is working with activists to enhance their documentation and to raise awareness of human rights abuses and build coalitions in support of anti-impunity measures in Guatemala.

Venezuela

In the face of heightened repression of human rights activists, widespread media censorship, and a critical humanitarian crisis, Freedom House supports Venezuelan organizations to serve as effective human rights watchdogs, to sustain and strengthen domestic independent media, and to raise awareness of Venezuela’s complex crisis at the international level, including the United Nations.

Cuba

Freedom House outspokenly advocates for the improvement of human rights in Cuba. As the Cuban government attempts to tighten its control over citizens in the face of expanded internet access across the island, Freedom House is sharing knowledge with Cuban activists that allow them to communicate securely and to collaborate effectively in a restrictive environment.
