Ethics and Safeguarding
Safeguarding Framework
Safeguarding is the protection from sexual and other exploitation, abuse, harassment, neglect, bullying, discrimination, human trafficking, or other harm of our staff, the people we serve, and others in the communities where we work. To ensure we operate with integrity and respect for human rights, uphold the “do no harm” ethical principle, and our duty to safeguard people in our work, Freedom House has developed a Safeguarding Framework which includes a comprehensive set of policies, procedures, and practices to guide us.
Freedom House Ethics Hotline
Maintaining our commitment to integrity and ethical conduct is fundamental to everything we do at Freedom House. The Ethics Hotline is a confidential, online reporting mechanism designed to allow for the reporting of concerns related to ethics, compliance, or misconduct. Staff may choose to use this secure, confidential method to anonymously or otherwise report a concern or potential policy or ethical violation. Reports submitted via this Hotline are received by an independent third party, Syntrio, and viewed by the Freedom House Talent and Culture team after received in the Syntrio system. Each submission will be investigated as appropriate and responded to in a timely manner by Talent and Culture.
Submissions via this Hotline are truly anonymous, as Syntrio will not share submitter information with Freedom House without the submitter’s express permission to do so, or unless the submitter chooses to share personally identifying information in their written concern.

Global Human Trafficking Hotline
In addition to internal reporting channels, staff are also encouraged to report suspected human trafficking activities, whether within our operations, partner organizations, or in communities where we work, or access support services through the Global Human Trafficking Hotline. This hotline, established by the non-profit organization Polaris with support from the U.S. government, is available 24/7. It offers a confidential means for reporting and can handle communications in multiple languages via phone, text, or online chat. Submissions may be made anonymously or otherwise. By promptly reporting any suspicious activity or concerns, we can play a vital role in preventing exploitation and protecting vulnerable individuals.
