In response to the shooting today of Pierre Claver Mbonimpa – president of the Association Burundaise pour la Promotion des Droits Humains et des Personnes Détenues (APRODH)— in Bujumbura, Burundi, Freedom House issued the following statement:

“The attack targeting Pierre Claver Mbonimpa is a clear attempt to silence civil society and coupled with the recent assassination of General Adolphe Nshimirimana could further destablize Burundi,” said Maïté Hostetter, senior Africa program officer.  “Freedom House calls on the international community to condemn this senseless act of violence and safeguard civil society, which is an essential voice in the effort to find a lasting solution in Burundi.”

Burundi is rated Not Free in Freedom in the World 2015, and Not Free in Freedom of the Press 2015
