Freedom House Calls for Peaceful Elections in Zambia
Washington
As Zambians head to the polls Tuesday to choose a president to succeed President Michael Sata, who died in October, Freedom House issued the following statement:
“Freedom House urges Zambians to respect the electoral process during the voting and the vote counting," said Vukasin Petrovic, director of Africa programs. “While the campaign period has been tense and marked by rivalries within the main political parties, Zambians can best support their country's democracy by refraining from violence."
Zambia is rated Partly Free in Freedom in the World 2014, Not Free in Freedom of the Press 2014, and Partly Free in Freedom on the Net 2014.
Freedom House is an independent watchdog organization that supports democratic change, monitors the status of freedom around the world, and advocates for democracy and human rights.
