Freedom House Welcomes New Vice President of Communications

Freedom House welcomes Lara Shane as the new vice president for communications. Shane brings extensive experience in strategic communications and diverse skills from the private, nonprofit, and public sectors. She served most recently as the managing director for marketing and communications at Cyber Defense Labs, which followed a decade of leadership at the Partnership for Public Service, where she served as the vice president for research and communications.

“We are delighted that Lara will bring her expertise and energy to Freedom House’s important mission,” said Freedom House president Michael J. Abramowitz. “She will be a crucial part of Freedom House’s leadership team and will bring tremendous experience to our efforts to raise Freedom House’s voice in support of freedom and democracy around the world.” 

Shane has over 20 years of communications and management experience and has served in various leadership roles. Prior to working at Cyber Defense Labs, Shane was a professorial lecturer at American University’s School of Communication, teaching a variety of strategic communications and media relations courses to undergraduate and graduate students. She has also served in the US government in the Department of Homeland Security as the director of public education, where she led various national public education and social marketing campaigns. She was media advisor to the head of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and an associate producer for CBS News.

Shane holds a master of arts degree in public communication from American University and a bachelor of arts in American studies from George Mason University.
