In response to the murder of the Guatemalan journalist Víctor Hugo Valdez Cardona in Chiquimula, Guatemala, Freedom House issued the following statement:

“The targeted killing of journalists in Guatemala, including four within the last two months, highlights the enormous threats there to a free press and the fundamental right of free speech," said Carlos Ponce, director for Latin America programs. “National and regional authorities should act swiftly to bring to justice the murderers of Victor Hugo Valdez Cardona and provide meaningful protection against attacks to journalists and human rights defenders.”
