Guatemala Should Immediately Investigate Murder of Journalists

Freedom House issued the following statement after gunmen killed two well-known Guatemalan journalists, and wounded a third. 


In response to gunmen shooting to death Danilo Sapón López from the newspaper Prensa Libre and Federico Salazar from Radio Nuevo Mundo, and wounding a third journalist, Armado Marvin Tunches, in Suchitepéquez, Guatemala, Freedom House issued the following statement:

“We strongly condemn these murders as attacks against freedom of the press and call upon authorities and institutions to redouble efforts to protect the life of journalists in Guatemala” said Carlos Ponce, director of Latin America programs. “The authorities should immediately investigate the killing of Danilo Sapón López and Federico Salazar and the attack against Armado Marvin Tunches, determine the motives, and bring those responsible to justice.” 

Guatemala is rated Partly Free in Freedom in the World 2015, and Partly Free in Freedom of the Press 2014
