Lesotho’s Early Elections Test Its Democracy
Freedom House issued the following statement in anticipation of Saturday’s elections in Lesotho.
In anticipation of Saturday’s elections in Lesotho, being held two years early in an attempt to ease the country’s ongoing political crisis, Freedom House issued the following statement:
“Lesotho voters want and deserve not only a free and fair election but also a commitment from the contesting parties that they will respect the results,” said Paul Graham, project director for southern Africa. “Only five months have passed since the interruption of democratic rule, and this election is designed to restore it. Lesotho’s leaders need to work together to end a long series of crises and to build a properly functioning constitutional order.”
