Murder of Journalist in Ukraine Undermines Press Freedom

Following the murder of journalist Oles Buzina by masked gunmen outside his home in Kyiv on April 16, Freedom House issued the following statement:
“We are shocked by the murder of Oles Buzina and call on the Ukrainian authorities to investigate this attack on press freedom and hold those responsible accountable” said Susan Corke, director for Eurasia Programs at Freedom House. “The increasing toll on journalists and media by violence in Ukraine should alarm both the government and every citizen. We urge the government to recognize journalists’ safety as an essential part of free speech and a free press.”

Ukraine is rated Partly Free in Freedom in the World 2015, Not Free in Freedom of the Press 2014, Partly Free in Freedom on the Net 2014, and receives a democracy score of 4.93 on a scale of 1 to 7, with 7 as the worst possible score, in Nations in Transit 2014.
