Russia: Freedom House Condemns Arrest of Opposition Figures

In response to the arrest of dozens of opposition figures in Russia, Freedom House issued the following statement:

“We condemn today’s arrests and call for the immediate release of all those detained and of the hundreds of human rights defenders and opposition figures who already face unjust jail sentences in Russia,” said Michael J. Abramowitz, president of Freedom House. “Arresting local elected officials at a conference dedicated to upcoming parliamentary elections is a clear attempt to intimidate free thinkers and stave off political challengers to President Putin's rule. We urge the United States government to press Russia for the immediate release of politically persecuted activists and to reinforce the policy of principled engagement rooted in supporting human rights and democracy."

Russia is rated Not Free in Freedom in the World 2020, Not Free in Freedom on the Net 2020, and is classified as a Consolidated Authoritarian Regime in Nations in Transit 2020.
