Senegal Begins Trial of Former Chadian President Habré
For Chadian President Hissène Habré is now on trial in Senegal for crimes against humanity committed during his presidency.
In response to the opening of the trial in Senegal of former Chadian president Hissène Habré for crimes against humanity committed during his presidency, from 1982 to 1990, Freedom House issued the following statement:
“We note the start of Habré’s trial in Senegal with both sadness and optimism,” said Maïté Hostetter, senior program officer for Africa. “We are reminded of the victims who suffered at the hands of Habré’s brutal regime and the long-awaited justice that they all deserve. The trial also marks a moment in history in which African states are seeking justice through domestic courts, sending a clear message to authoritarian leaders that abuse of power will not be tolerated.”
