Ukraine: Attack on ‘March for Equality’ Undermines Hopes for Democracy

Following the June 6, 2015, attack by homophobic and transphobic thugs on the 2015 KyivPride’s March for Equality, Freedom House released the following statement:
“The attack against Ukraine’s LGBTI rights defenders should offend eveyone who values equal rights,” said Susan Corke, director of Eurasia programs. “Many LGBTI Ukrainians and supporters of dignity for all marched for the same ideals they supported during the Euromaidan revolution. Ukraine’s ‘Revolution of Dignity’ will not have achieved its goals until all Ukrainian citizens are treated equally and respected for who they are, irrespective of their sexual orientation or gender identity.”

Ukraine is rated Partly Free in Freedom in the World 2015, Partly Free in Freedom of the Press 2015, Partly Free in Freedom on the Net 2014, and receives a democracy score of 4.93 on a scale of 1 to 7, with 7 as the worst possible score, in Nations in Transit 2014
