U.S. Court Decision Guarantees Same-Sex Couples Fundamental Rights

On June 25, the United States Supreme Court ruled in the case of Obergefell v. Hodges, gauranteeing same-sex couples the right to marry.

In response to the U.S. Supreme Court ruling that the Constitution guarantees same-sex couples the right to marry, Freedom House issued the following statement:

“The court’s decision recognizes the dignity of same-sex couples and protects them against discrimination for their choice of who to love and marry,” said Mark P. Lagon, president of Freedom House. “We have seen rapid changes in American public opinion about same-sex-marriage, which give us hope that freedoms will come to be recognized and protected world-wide -- equally for all people.”
