A country or territory’s Freedom in the World status depends on its aggregate Political Rights score, on a scale of 0–40, and its aggregate Civil Liberties score, on a scale of 0–60.
See the methodology.
- In January, Parliament passed a bill granting a new Ombudsman’s office authority to investigate public bodies for maladministration. The body had not been fully established by year’s end.
- In July Bahamian police, with the assistance of US and UK law enforcement bodies, launched an investigation after several voice notes implicating a senior police official in corruption were leaked and went viral on social media. In the recordings, the official was allegedly heard discussing a quid pro quo with a prominent crime figure by which police would drop certain charges. (The crime figure was killed in May, in an unsolved murder.) With public trust in police damaged by the scandal, as well as by persistent reports of police brutality, lawmakers proposed legislation to establish an independent commission responsible for investigating complaints against law enforcement agencies.
- The country’s Tribune newspaper reported 119 homicides during the year, noting an 8 percent increase from 2023. The figures underscored a troubling resurgence in violent crime, sparking renewed concerns about public safety.
- The country’s first LGBT+ march took place in October without incident, supported by a significant police presence.
