- Former President Désire “Dési” Bouterse died in December. In 2019, Bouterse had been convicted and sentenced to 20 years’ imprisonment for abducting and murdering political opponents in 1982, when he was Suriname’s military ruler. Bouterse, also leader of the largest opposition party, went into hiding in 2023 after Suriname’s Court of Justice upheld the ruling, and remained at large until his death.
- In August, Public Works Minister Riad Nurmohamed filed a defamation lawsuit against the website Starnieuws and its editor in chief Nita Ramcharan, after Ramcharan accused him in a column of responsibly for a leak of confidential information. In November, the court ruled against the Nurmohamed and ordered him to pay legal costs.
- Authorities took steps to combat human trafficking, including by making arrests of suspected traffickers and establishing new reporting channels for the public.
